Review a Testimonial Cut Against the Interview, Not Just the Script

Review a customer testimonial cut by comparing its claims and meaning with the source interview, checking the supporting pictures and verifying every on-screen statement. Give feedback against a named version with timecodes and clear decisions. A shorter, smoother edit should still represent what the customer actually experienced and meant.

The first viewing may tell you whether the film feels convincing. A separate review should establish why it deserves that confidence. Make room to check the substance before the team concentrates on music, color and finishing.

Watch once as a prospective buyer

Before opening the comment list, watch the cut without the production brief beside you. Write down the question it appears to answer and the conclusion a viewer might draw. Then compare those impressions with the intended message.

If the film implies more than the customer said, identify the moment creating that impression. The issue might be a sentence, a headline or the relationship between an answer and the picture shown beneath it. A useful note describes that problem rather than asking for a vague change in energy.

Our customer testimonial production guide covers choosing and interviewing the participant. This review starts later, when the recorded account has become a particular sequence.

Trace important statements back to the source

Ask for source references for the statements that carry the story. Check the surrounding question and answer, not only the selected sentence. Listen for a condition, timeframe or limitation that affects its meaning.

In a hypothetical interview, a customer might say a particular step became easier after a change. Removing the name of that step could make the line sound like a claim about the entire operation. Restore the context or revise the sequence rather than asking the viewer to infer the missing qualification.

Separate the customer’s impression from a measurable result. If the cut includes a numerical outcome, identify the underlying evidence and the person responsible for verifying it. A confident delivery does not replace that check.

Check what the pictures appear to prove

Review supporting footage beside the words it accompanies. Does the sequence show the process being discussed, or could it imply activity or results that were not documented? Mark illustrative footage clearly in the review conversation.

Read lower thirds, captions and graphics as part of the message. Confirm names, roles and terminology with the appropriate reviewer. A graphic can introduce a new claim even when the spoken interview has not changed.

Discuss unresolved material with the video editing team. Explain which issue is factual and which is a creative preference so the response addresses the right problem.

Return a decision the editor can act on

Identify the export version, timecode, issue and requested resolution. A note might ask the editor to restore a qualifying phrase, replace an unrelated shot or hold a graphic until its wording is verified. Consolidate conflicting requests before sending them back.

The editing handoff checklist explains what source material and notes should accompany the assignment. Keep those references accessible during review, especially when another stakeholder joins late.

Approve the actual final package

After changes, check the revised sequence and the intended exports. Do not assume a main-film approval covers every shortened version. An excerpt may lose the context that made the longer answer accurate.

Confirm that required customer, brand and factual reviews are complete for the intended use. Use the approval planning guide to make responsibility clear. Keep approval attached to the final version rather than to an earlier conversation about the concept.

Should every pause and hesitation remain?

No. An edit can remove repetition and improve clarity while preserving meaning. Review whether the finished answer remains faithful to the customer’s account, rather than treating either a polished sentence or an untouched recording as automatic proof of accuracy.

What if a strong quote cannot be verified?

Flag the issue and ask the accountable reviewer to resolve it. Revise or omit the claim if its support remains uncertain. Do not let the production schedule turn an unresolved statement into an approved one.
